ADOPTION PROCESS
All adoption applications and references are reviewed thoroughly. Adoption applications will be approved based on the placement best suited for the animal and the adopter. We reserve the right to disapprove any application.
Here are the steps you will go through in the adoption process:
- Our process includes asking questions, asking to see proof of identity and checking veterinary references, particularly when you have other animals at home.
- You’ll have a counseling session with a knowledgeable member of our staff who will fill you in on the history and needs of that animal, and his feeding and exercise requirements. You can ask your counselor any questions about spaying or neutering, housetraining, obedience training, scratching (in cats), veterinary care, how to deal with fleas and ticks, and other animal situations.
- You will be asked to sign an adoption contract and pay an adoption fee. There is a schedule of fees, which begin at $50. The adoption fee covers the veterinary care, deworming, and vaccines your pet receives before adoption. All animals adopted from our rescue are spayed/neutered.
ADOPTION POLICIES
- Animals are available for adoption to persons approved by Mia’s Mafia. All persons living in the household are encouraged to be involved in the selection of the pet. If the adopter is single and living at home with parents, the parents must give permission for adoption of the animal.
- Permission of the landlord is required of persons living on rental property. Be sure to check the pet policies beforehand and be sure to provide the name of the landlord and contact information. We will be calling the landlord to verify.
- Animals will be placed with adults of legal age, to be kept as household pets and not work to serve only as guards, hunters, or mousers.
- Owners are required to provide each companion animal with adequate food, water, shelter, space, exercise, treatment, and veterinary care.
- No animal will be adopted to persons having an extensive history of losing, giving away, selling, or having animals injured or killed by moving vehicles.
- Because our cats are in foster homes and all of our foster parents are volunteers, we cannot arrange a meet and greet with a cat or kitten until your application has been submitted and approved.
- If there are multiple applicants for the same cat or kitten, we will choose what we consider to be the most appropriate applicant for that particular animal. Each of our rescued cats and kittens has individual personalities and needs, and we know that every home is not appropriate for every cat or kitten.
- Applications submitted on the weekends cannot be processed until Monday or Tuesday, holidays and other factors may slow this process. It may take up to a week depending on availability of adoption counselors and whether or not reference releases have been obtained. Once you have submitted your application, please contact your veterinarian and authorize the release of your veterinary records. Not all require this, but many do, and it will help speed the process.
- We require that adopters are within 60 miles of Raleigh. That helps ensure that we can facilitate the return of any adopted fosters that may need to come back to us.
